Maruti Suzuki wants govt to reconsider to make 6 airbags mandatory

Maruti Suzuki say the rule of six airbags will also affect the production.

Veteran auto maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday said the central government should reconsider its proposal to make six airbags mandatory in passenger vehicles.

According to the company, the automobile market has already been affected by the shortage of semiconductors and rising prices of electronic parts. In such a situation, the rule of six airbags will also affect the production. At the same time, going forward, its effect will also be seen on the jobs of the auto sector.

Now vehicles will come with six airbags

In fact, at the beginning of the year, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had informed about a new safety rule, which will make it necessary to install at least six airbags in eight-seater vehicles.

The new rule is going to come into effect from October this year.

Gadkari released a post from his Twitter account, in which he said that this step has been taken to ensure the safety of the passengers sitting in the back seat.

Sales may be affected – Maruti

Maruti Suzuki said that this rule will affect vehicles in the entry level segment to a great extent. This segment has been affected for the last three years due to Corona and is facing continuous declining sales.

If it becomes necessary to install six airbags in vehicles, then their prices will also increase and due to this it may become more difficult for two-wheelers to upgrade to smaller cars.

The company president said this

Speaking to news agency PTI , RC Bhargava, President, Maruti Suzuki India said that in the last years, the cost of small vehicles has increased significantly due to many different regulations including engines with BS6 standards.

Talking about this, he further said that with the increase in prices, the sale of small vehicles is also being affected across the country, due to which the market of these vehicles will shrink further.

Government should reconsider this rule- Bhargava

Bhargava said, “Automobile manufacturers feel that this is not the right time to bring six airbag rules. We want the government to reconsider the matter.”

May incur additional expenses

Under the new rule, installing six airbags will cost an additional Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000. Due to this, the price of passenger vehicles can increase by Rs 30,000 to 50,000.

The Indian government had made dual airbags mandatory for cars. It is now mandatory for cars manufactured and sold in India to have airbags on the driver as well as the seat next to him. Thus, increase in prices coupled with short selling is not a good sign.
