Maamanithan is the 4th film to be made by Vijay Sethupathi and Seenu Ramasamy following the films Southwest Monsoon, idam porul yaeval and Dharmadurai.
One Man! This is the man within him, the man. Seenu Ramasamy has taken this picture in an attempt to convey it to the viewers.
Vijay Sethupathi, who is an auto driver, lives happily with his wife and two children. She does not study much and tries to send her children to private schools. Vijay Sethupathi’s decision to do so complicates his life.
Unexpectedly, Vijay Sethupathi gets into big trouble and runs away from his hometown and family. Where did he go? Are you back What did the family become by his act? What happened to Vijay Sethupathi is the rest of the story.
The director calmly and quietly tells a realistic family story in a rural setting, with nothing but gunfire, punchy dialogue, ear-splitting background music and tumultuous demonstrations.
The family pretends to be at ease, making it appear that the scenes for the man’s suffering may have been recorded more stressfully. There are tear-jerking scenes in three places in the second half though.
But have tried to give prominence to all the characters featured. Gayatri, Guru Somasundaram and Malayalam actress Jewel Mary have realized their role and acted in it. Similarly Manashvi who is the daughter of Vijay Sethupathi has scored in her scenes.
Ilayaraja and Yuvan Shankar Raja have co-composed the music for Maamanithan. But without the hue of the two. Makes it seem like there might have been an extra focus on background music. Also the songs of Seenu Ramasamy films have won the National Award.
But there are no such songs in this film. The story travels from the farm to Alappuzha and Varanasi. But the screenplay is set in the same straight line. Yet the man tries to convey the joy and pain of a family trip to the audience.
