Studies on various vaccines worldwide have shown that the additional dose provides extended protection against Covid-19.
A study conducted in Israel found that four doses provide more protection than three doses against serious diseases. India is paying a precautionary 3rd dose to the public.

The 4th dose payment to citizens over the age of 60 in Israel began on January 2 this year. Pfizer pays for BioNTech’s vaccine.
The study was conducted from January 10 to March 10, when the impact of the Omicron variant was greatest. The results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The researchers used data from the Israeli Ministry of Health for 12.5 million people aged 60 or over.
The rate of confirmed infection and acute goiter occurs 8 days after the fourth dose. This is in proportion to the proportion of persons receiving only three doses, and 3 to 7 days before the fourth dose.

Fourth Dose Study Results
Rates of confirmed corona infection and severe Covid-19 were lower after the fourth dose than at the third dose. Protection against confirmed infection seemed short-lived. But, protection against severe infections lasted.
The uncorrected number of severe Covid-19 cases per 100,000 person-days was 1.5 in those receiving four doses, 3.9 in those receiving three doses, and 4.2 in the internal control group.
At adjustment, after the fourth dose, the acute cov- eral rate was 3.5 times lower in the fourth week factor-factor than in the three-dose payer, and factor 2.3 lower in the internal control group.
