Gujarat Magistrate court sentenced 10 including MLA Jignesh Mevani to three months in jail

On July 12, 2017, Mevani, along with his colleagues, had called for an independence march from Mehsana to Dhanera in Banaskantha to protest against the non-retraction of cases registered against Dalits and others over the incident.

He took out this march even after the administration did not allow it.

Police had registered an FIR for taking out the march without permission

Congress leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Resham Patel and Subodh Kumar were also involved in this march along with Mevani. During this march, the protesters created a big ruckus.

In such a situation, the police had made 12 people including Mevani accused in this case for taking out the march without permission.

However, last year, during the framing of charges in the court, the court had decided to conduct separate hearing against Kanhaiya Kumar as he was not present.

Court convicted 10 including Mevani

In this case, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate JA Parmar on Thursday arrested MLA Mevani and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) office-bearer Reshma Patel and nine others, including some members of Mevani’s Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, under Section 143 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Convicted of being part of an unlawful assembly.

The court has also imposed a monetary fine of Rs 1,000-1,000 on all of them, while sentenced them to three months in jail.

One accused has died

Mevani had returned to Gujarat on Tuesday itself.

Mevani was granted bail only on April 29 in the case of assault and molestation of a female constable , but it took two days for her to complete the bail process.

After this, he reached Vadgam on Tuesday only. After reaching Gujarat, Mevani targeted the BJP government of the state and termed it as useless.

Now just two days later, he has been sentenced to jail in the Azadi March case.
