In the financial year 2020-21, BJP got 477 crore donations, 6.4 times more than Congress

The Bharatiya Janata Party had received donations of Rs 477.5 crore during the financial year 2020-21. In comparison, the Congress could get donations of only Rs 74.5 crore. That is, BJP has got 6.4 times donations from Congress.

In the information submitted to the Election Commission, the BJP said that it has received donations of Rs 477.5 crore from Electoral Trusts, individuals and different organizations in the last financial year.

The Election Commission made this information public on Tuesday.

Congress got less donations for the eighth consecutive year

According to the information given by the Congress , the party has received donations of only Rs 74.50 crore from electoral trusts, individuals and different organizations last year.

It is worth noting that the Congress, which lost power to the BJP in 2014, is losing one state after another and is currently in power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the Congress is lagging behind the BJP in getting donations.

Information required for donations above 20,000

Under the law, it is necessary to inform the Election Commission about the donations received by political parties in the amount of more than Rs 20,000. However, transparency in receiving donations has always been under question.

BJP ahead in getting donations from electoral trust

Political parties had received a total donation of Rs 258.49 crore in 2020-21 from seven electoral trusts set up to systematically collect donations from industry and people .

Of these, the maximum amount of Rs 212.05 crore was given to the ruling BJP at the Centre, while the Congress got only Rs 5.43 crore. Janata Dal United had received more donations of Rs 10 crore than Congress.

This information was received from the report of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

These parties got donations from electoral trusts

The electoral trusts donated a total of Rs 19.38 crore to Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, AIADMK, DMK, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Aam Aadmi Party, Lok Janshakti Party, Communist Party of Marxist, Communist Party of India and Loktantrik Janata Dal.

Let us tell you, Electoral Trusts are companies covered under section 25, in which businessmen make donations of their own free will and these companies further donate that donation to political parties. This keeps the identity of the donors confidential.

In 2019-20, the BJP had received donations of about Rs 750 crore. This amount was five times more than the nearly Rs 139 crore that the Congress got during that time.

Please note that this was a separate amount from the donation received through electoral bonds.

Apart from BJP and Congress, Nationalist Congress Party received Rs 59 crore, Trinamool Congress Rs 8 crore, CPM Rs 19.6 crore and CPI Rs 1.9 crore in 2019-20.
