President Draupadi Murmu Speech: President Draupadi Murmu addressed the nation today i.e. on Sunday evening on the eve of Independence Day. This was his first address to the nation as President. During this, he said that on the eve of 76th Independence Day, I extend my warm greetings to all the Indians living in the country and abroad. The President said that it gives me great pleasure to address you on this proud occasion.
He said that India is completing 75 years as an independent country. The day of 14th August is being celebrated as Partition-Horrific Memorial Day. The purpose of celebrating this Memorial Day is to promote social harmony, human empowerment and unity.
On 15 August 1947, we cut the shackles of colonial rule. On that day we had decided to reshape our destiny. While celebrating the anniversary of that auspicious day, we salute all the freedom fighters. He sacrificed everything so that we can all breathe in a free India.
India’s independence is a matter of celebration for us as well as for every supporter of democracy in the world. When India became independent, many international leaders and thinkers had expressed apprehensions about the success of our democratic government system. There were many reasons forhis apprehension.
In those days (before independence) democracy was confined to the economically advanced nations. Foreign rulers had exploited India for years. Due to this the people of India were struggling with poverty and illiteracy. But the Indians proved their apprehensions wrong. The roots of democracy in the soil of India became deeper and stronger.
Women had to struggle for a long time to get the right to vote in most democratic countries. But from the very beginning of our republic, India adopted universal adult suffrage. Thus the architects of modern India provided an opportunity to every adult citizen to participate in the collective process of nation-building. India goes to the credit of making the world community aware of the true potential of democracy.
I believe that this achievement of India was not just a coincidence. At the very beginning of civilization, the saints and mahatmas of the land of India had developed a life-vision based on the equality and unity of all beings. Our ancient values of life were re-established in the modern era during the freedom struggle led by great heroes like Mahatma Gandhi.
That is why elements of Indianness are visible in our democracy. Gandhiji was in favor of decentralization of power and empowering the common man. For the last 75 weeks, the great ideals of the freedom struggle are being remembered in our country. The ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ was launched in March 2021 by reviving the memory of Dandi Yatra. That epoch-making movement established our struggle on the world stage. Our festival was startedby honoring him. This festival is dedicated to the people of India.
On the basis of the success achieved by the countrymen, the resolve to build ‘Self-reliant India’ is also a part of this festival. Citizens of all age groups are enthusiastically participating in the programs of this festival organized all over the country. Our glorious freedom struggle continued to operate with bravery in this vast land of India. Many great freedom fighters presented examples of valor and handed over the torch of national awakening to the next generation. The contribution of many brave warriors and the heroes of their struggles especially the farmers and tribal community remained out of the collective memory for a long time.
