Indian Population Control Law enacted soon say Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel

The central government may soon bring a population control law in the country. Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel on Tuesday said that such a law would be brought soon amid increasing demand.

Talking to reporters after attending a program in Raipur, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Patel said that if the government has taken many big and strong decisions, then a law will also be brought regarding population control.

When journalists questioned Patel about the population control law, he replied, “It will also be brought soon, don’t worry. When such strong and big decisions are taken, the rest will also be (completed).”

India ranks second in terms of population

Significantly , after China , India is the second most populous country in the world with a population of about 140 million.

Looking at the pace of population growth in India, it is estimated that in the next few years it will overtake China. For a long time, there has been a demand for a law to control population in the country and efforts have been made at many levels regarding this.

BJP MPs had brought private member bill

In July 2019, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha introduced the Private Member Bill regarding population control. In this, there was a demand to implement the rule of two children and to fix the provision of penal action for its violation.

After this, many Union Ministers have demanded to bring such a law. Union Minister Giriraj Singh has demanded to bring such a law many times. Ramdas Athawale also agreed with him.

Steps being taken at the state level also

At the state level also some steps are being taken towards population control. In July last year, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had directed the formation of a high-level committee for matters like population control and stringent land laws.

Around the same time, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma Biswa had said that gradually the two-child policy would be implemented in the state for those who want to take advantage of government benefits.

What is the stand of the central government on this?

The central government has denied the need to bring a law for population control in the Parliament. It was said on behalf of the government that instead of putting pressure on the people, they are being successfully made aware for population control.

On April 2, 2022, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had said that there was no need to bring a population control bill. For this, the government is making people aware and health campaigns are also being run.

Fall in growth rate – Mandaviya

Then, while giving information about the measures to be taken for family planning in the Parliament, Mandaviya had said that there is a decline in the population growth rate. The average annual growth rate in 1971 was 2.2 percent, which fell to 1.64 in 2011. This is a good sign.

The Health Minister said that the policies of the government are working well without any pressure and compulsion to control the population.
