Construction of the AIIMS hospital is underway in other states, including Punjab and Assam, where construction has been announced. But various criticisms arose as the construction work was not carried out only in Tamil Nadu.
But after that the plan was put on hold. No construction work has taken place. There was only the brick on which the foundation stone was laid.
Further controversy erupted when the Union Health Ministry said at the time that the Tamil Nadu government had not immediately handed over the land for the AIIMS hospital.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said last month that it had consulted with Japan’s JICA on December 24 to secure funding for the AIIMS hospital in Madurai and that the federal government and JICA would soon sign an agreement.
It was also announced that negotiations were underway to provide JICA with 85 per cent of the total cost of construction of the Ames Hospital. The project cost is around Rs. 2 thousand crore.
As a result, the construction work for the Madurai AIIMS Hospital has not taken place for the last two and a half years. The roads leading to the area and the perimeter wall construction work alone cost Rs. It was completed at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
Now Japan’s JICA has entered into an agreement with the Central Government to build the Madurai AIIMS Hospital at a cost of Rs. Union Health Minister Mansuk Mandavia has said that Rs 1,500 crore has been set aside.
He said action would be taken to allocate the remaining funds by October 26.
The total project value is Rs. 1,977 crore to Rs. Construction of the Madurai AIIMS hospital will begin soon as Rs 1,500 crore has been set aside, officials said.
In this connection, Madurai MP. S. Venkatesh said: –
I have been constantly voicing in Parliament that the construction work of the AIIMS Hospital at Toppur, Madurai should begin soon. I have been making great effort for every move of it. Accordingly, I have requested the Union Minister of Health to provide full details regarding the Madurai AIIMS Hospital as per Parliament Rule No.377. The full details are given by the Federal Secretary of Health.
According to the report, Japan’s JICA has set aside Rs 1,500 crore out of the total project cost of Rs 1,977 crore for the construction of the Madurai AIIMS Hospital. The balance will be paid by October. Thus, it has been informed that the construction work of AIIMS in Madurai will start soon.
