Rameswaram police were immediately informed and police arrived at the scene. The scene was brought into the security ring. Forensic experts were called in and those who examined the body collected the evidence.
Meanwhile, riots broke out in the town. Chandra was allegedly teased by six northerners from Orissa who work at a shrimp farm in the area for the past 2 days.

Thus Chandra’s relatives and the fishing villagers, who were suspicious of the northerners, came together and smashed the shrimp farm. The six northerners who worked there barraged and kicked all six, claiming that Chandra may have been sexually abused.
They also set fire to a two-wheeler they were using.
As the incident unfolded, more than 100 police and riot police, led by Ramanathapuram District Superintendent of Police Karthik, rallied and sent Chandra’s body to the Ramanathapuram Government Hospital for autopsy.
Later, they arrested 6 North Indians suspected to be the culprits and took them to the police station for interrogation with heavy police security.
At the end of the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that 3 youths from the North had tortured and killed Chandra while intoxicated. However, it is not known who the three are and all the six have been arrested and are being investigated.
Meanwhile, northern fishermen staged a road blockade demanding appropriate action against the culprits involved. Only after a serious investigation will it be known whether the northerners are guilty or innocent.
