Islamabad: Imran Khan was ousted as Prime Minister of Pakistan following the victory of a no-confidence motion against his government by the country’s opposition in the Pakistani parliament.
Following this, Shahbaz Sharif, the brother of Pakistan’s opposition leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, filed his candidacy for the country’s new prime ministerial election. He had the support of the opposition.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi had filed the petition on behalf of Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) in the contest. The country’s parliament convened today to elect a new prime minister. Shah Mahmood Qureshi has announced that his party will boycott the election of a new prime minister, as his party’s MPs walk out of parliament.
Shahbaz Sharif, the opposition candidate and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, was elected unopposed as the new prime minister with the support of opposition MPs. It has been reported that he will take office tonight.
Earlier, former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that PTI MPs would resign.
