Single Use Plastic Delhi govt gave 10 days relaxation to ban on plastics

Single Use Plastic: An official said that in view of the impact of Covid-19 on business and inflation, it would be harmful to impose restrictions without giving options to the people.

Single Use Plastic Ban: The Delhi Government has decided to be lenient towards the violators of the ban on Single Use Plastic (SUP) during the first 10 days and to spread awareness against the use of such products in a big way. The campaign has started. The government will encourage those manufacturers of single use plastics, who would like to adopt the green option.

An official said that in view of the impact of Covid-19 on business and inflation, it would be harmful to impose restrictions without giving options to the people. Environment Minister Gopal Rai had said on Friday that the ban came into effect at a time when the unemployment rate was high.

He had said, “Manufacturers, distributors and sellers of SUP items may be affected by this decision. Many people will find it difficult to survive and these people are our own people.”

To promote the option of SUP products, a three-day fair is being organized at Thyagaraj Stadium here. On Sunday, the government will hold a roundtable with all stakeholders, including food delivery companies such as Zomato and Swiggy, to discuss these options.

The government has also issued instructions to urban local bodies to set up ‘kiosks’ in the markets for promotion and sale of SUP options. Delhi generates 1,060 tonnes of plastic waste every day. The SUP is estimated to be 5.6 per cent (or 56 kg per metric ton) of the total solid waste in the capital.
