UU Lalit Name recommends NV Ramana for Chief Justice of India

UU Lalit has been recommended as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

New Delhi: NV Ramana was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2021. His tenure ends this month.

The post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is given on the basis of seniority. It is customary for the incumbent Chief Justice to nominate and announce the next judge before his retirement. Therefore, the Chief Justice should recommend one of these in consultation with the collegium members.

Therefore, the Union Law Ministry had written to Chief Justice NV Ramana to suggest who could be appointed as the next Chief Justice. Accordingly, the current Chief Justice NV Ramana has nominated UU Lalit as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

If the recommendation is accepted, U.U.Lalit will be appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The President will administer the oath of office to him.

Earlier, Sharad Arvind Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2019. It is noteworthy that N.V. Ramana from Andhra Pradesh was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on his recommendation as his tenure ended in April last year.
