New Delhi: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is in power at the Centre, has announced West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate for the post of Vice President.
Announcing Dhankhar’s name late on Saturday night after the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting, party president JP Nadda described him as a farmer’s son and the governor of the people.
Born in Rajasthan’s farmer family, Dhankhar started with advocacy
Coming from the Jat community, Jagdeep Dhankhar was born in 1951 in a farmer family in Kithana village in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan .
He started his studies from a school in the village itself and then went on to study at Sainik School in Chittorgarh on scholarship.
After this, he obtained a degree in Physics and Law from Rajasthan University. He has also practiced in Supreme Court and Rajasthan High Court.
Started political career with Janata Dal
Dhankhar started his political career with the Janata Dal in the 1980s and was elected a Lok Sabha MP from Jhunjhunu seat in 1989 on its ticket.
During this, former Prime Minister and veteran leader of Haryana, Devi Lal was his mentor and in 1990, when Devi Lal withdrew support from the then Prime Minister VP Singh’s government, Dhankhar also got out of the government.
After this he was the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandrashekhar government in 1990.
Dhankhar joined Congress after Janata Dal
After the Janata Dal, Dhankhar joined the Congress and was elected MLA from Kisangarh in Alwar in 1993 on its ticket.
However, after the rise of Ashok Gehlot in the Rajasthan Congress, he was on the sidelines and after considering his options for a long time, he finally joined the BJP in 2008. He is considered close to Rajasthan’s veteran BJP leader Vasundhara Raje Scindia.
Conflict with Mamta Banerjee’s government several times as governor
Dhankhar got national recognition after being made the Governor of West Bengal in July 2019. As governor, he has had several clashes with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) state government.
He had blamed the state government for the violence that took place after the 2021 assembly elections. In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had targeted him.
The TMC government has also passed a bill to remove him from the post of chancellor of universities.
Dhankhar almost certain to become Vice President
On August 6, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs will be cast in the Vice-President’s election . With the BJP-led NDA having a majority in both the houses, Dhankhar is almost certain to become the Vice President.
