Why May 25 Consider as World Thyroid Day

World Thyroid Day is observed annually on May 25 to raise awareness about thyroid disease.

Thyroid problems, which affect many people around the world, can affect both men and women. It is caused by a change in the movement of the thyroid gland.

The thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped in the center of the lower part of the neck. From this is produced the hormone thyroxine, which regulates metabolism.

It has the ability to control how much energy the cells in the body must use. Hyperthyroidism is caused by an over-secretion of thyroxine and hypothyroidism by an under-secretion. Women are ten times more likely to be affected than men.
