Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a military operation in Ukraine’s Donbass region. He announced this in a televised speech. Putin made the remarks while urging the UN Security Council to keep his peace over Ukraine.
Putin said in a televised address that the purpose of the “special military operation” was to remove the Ukrainian army.
There have been reports of missile strikes in several parts of Ukraine. A similar attack is said to have taken place in the capital, Kiev.
Ukraine’s foreign minister has accused Russia of carrying out a “widespread attack”. He urged the UN to do everything possible to stop this.
US President Joe Biden has condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin had chosen war with premeditated killing.
Leaders of Britain, the European Union, the United Nations and NATO have also strongly condemned Russia’s attack.
