WhatsApp closed accounts of more than 19 lakh Indians in May, action under new IT rules

WhatsApp has banned more than 19 lakh Indian accounts in May based on complaints received from users. The messaging platform owned by Meta said that it has banned these WhatsApp accounts under the new IT Rules, 2021.

Earlier in April also, WhatsApp had banned 16.6 lakh Indian accounts. The company said in a statement that it had received 528 Grievance Reports in May and out of which it has acted in 24 cases. At the same time, in April, WhatsApp received 844 Grievance reports.

WhatsApp said in a statement,”Over the years, we have made significant investments in artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies.

At the same time, our data scientists and experts are constantly working to make users on our platform safe.”

Explain that under the new IT rules, it is mandatory for all digital platforms with more than 50 lakh users to publish compliance reports every month, giving details of complaints received from users.

Why is the account banned?

According to the company, if anyone shares any unlawful, obscene, defamatory, threatening, intimidating or harassing and hateful or otherwise unlawful or ill-advised content on his WhatsApp The account is banned. Apart from this, even if a user does not follow the terms and conditions of the company, his account gets closed.
