It has been reported that the government wants all smartphones in India to have a single Type-C charger. Through this, the government has planned to meet the smartphone manufacturers and related companies in order to put an end to the various types of charging ports.
In this letter, the Central Consumer Affairs Department has informed the concerned companies about the possibility of bringing a single type of charging port for all devices like Windows 11 laptop, tablet, iPhone, Android smartphone and wants to carry out related projects.
LiFE: The Ministry seems to have taken this initiative on the theme of LiFE, a lifestyle mantra for the environment announced by Prime Minister Modi at the UN Climate Conference (CoP 26) held in Glasgow last November. In addition, it seems that the ministry has taken this in hand to reduce electronic waste (eWaste).
What does this letter say? – As chargers are not compatible between old and new smartphones and tablets, when consumers buy new phones, they have to buy a new dedicated charger and cable. This causes inconvenience to consumers. It has been reported that it is necessary to investigate the possibility of using the same type of charger cable in order to solve this problem.
It seems that the consultation meeting regarding this is going to be held on the 17th. “Digital device manufacturers have made this possible in the US and Europe. Why can’t it be done in India too?” An official of the Central Consumer Affairs Department has questioned.
Europe Model! – Last year the Commission of the European Union came up with a new rule regarding charging ports. It stated that Type-C charging port is mandatory for all types of electronic devices starting with smartphones. This rule will be implemented in Europe from 2024.
Is a single charger possible for all devices? – Top selling smartphone companies in the Indian smartphone market like top Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme have already switched to the Type-C port. All these phones have the same charging cable. But the output voltage of its power adapter varies.
Apple on the other hand has to change the charging ports on iPhones. Also, premium and above 13 thousand rupees phones have Type-C port. Most new phones priced below that seem to have micro USB. Similarly, there are other devices like smartwatch, ear buds etc in this list.
When this single charging port or cable issue is issued as a rule or order, all organizations have to change accordingly. Overall, this initiative is good for the environment and people.
