What is Elon Musk’s Starlink? Why send thousands of satellites into space?

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is launching a number of satellites into orbit. Many people also report seeing it in the sky. These are part of the Starlink project, a project to bring high-speed internet to Earth.

What is Starlink? How does it work?

Starlink will provide the fastest internet service to Earth through a constellation of satellites.

The aim is to provide this service to remote areas where high-speed internet is not available.

Dr Lucinda King, manager of space programs at the University of Portsmouth, says there are people all over the world who don’t have access to the internet.

These Starlink satellites will be positioned in low Earth orbit to provide the fastest possible high-speed Internet access.

However, many more low-altitude satellites will be needed to serve the entire Earth.

Since 2018, about 3000 satellites have been launched for the Starlink project. Over time it could use about 10,000 to 12,000 satellites, says Chris Hall.

Also, such projects can provide internet service even to remote areas like hilly areas and deserts. Otherwise, it would be a huge cost to build the infrastructure to connect the areas through cables, he said.
