Kabul: The epicenter was reported 44 km south of the southeastern Afghan city of Khost. The quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey said the quake was felt at a depth of about 51 km.

The quake damaged hundreds of buildings in Afghanistan’s Paktika, Nangarhar and Ghost provinces. The death toll from the rubble has risen to 1150. More than 1700 people were injured. Rescue crews are engaged in rescue operations by helicopter.
