America: Indiscriminate firing on Independence Day parade in Chicago; Six killed, 24 injured

A gunman opened fire at an Independence Day parade in Chicago, USA , on Monday. Six people have died in the incident, while at least 24 people are said to be injured.

The attacker fired bullets from the roof

The incident took place at Highland Park near Chicago . A family-centric parade was being taken out here on Monday morning to celebrate Independence Day.

The parade had completed three-fourths of its way, when around 10:14 a.m. the attackers started firing from the nearby terrace.

As soon as the firing started, the people in the parade and the spectators started running to save their lives and there was an atmosphere of panic.

Five people died on the spot, one died in the hospital

According to the police, five of the six killed in the firing died on the spot, while one succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. At the same time, the condition of some of the 24 injured admitted to the hospital remains critical. 16 injured have been discharged.

The injured ranged from eight-year-olds to 85-year-olds. Of these, four to five children are being told in total.

Suspect taken into custody after a brief scuffle

About eight hours after the incident, around 6:30 pm, the local police informed about the custody of a suspect. The accused has been identified as 22-year-old Robert E Crimeo.

The accused tried to run away after a policeman spotted his car on a highway in North Chicago, but was apprehended after a brief scuffle.

The picture of the accused resembles that of an online rap artist from Chicago.

President Biden expressed grief, said – I will continue to fight against gun violence

President Joe Biden expressed grief over the incident by tweeting.

He wrote, ‘Jill and I are shocked by this senseless gun violence that has once again hurt the American community this Independence Day. As always, we are grateful to the first responders and law officers at the scene. I will not stop fighting this epidemic of gun violence.

He also observed silence for the dead at an event at the White House.

According to a non-profit organization working on gun culture safety, there have been 309 incidents of mass shootings in the US so far in 2022. Any incident that kills at least four people is considered a mass shooting.
