The Coptic Church said a fire broke out during an early morning public service at the Abo Cephine Church in Giza city on the southern edge of Cairo, killing at least 41 and injuring 14, the DPA news agency reported.

The home ministry said the fire was caused by an air conditioner electric circuit in the church building. The fire was later brought under control, the ministry said in a statement. 5 civil defense personnel were injured in the incident.

The presidential office said President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi spoke on the phone with Coptic Christian Pope Tawadros II and offered his condolences.
