China Taiwan Conflict: A day after the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, China’s military launched precise strikes on targets during military drills in the Taiwan Strait on Thursday. The results are as expected. The Chinese army has given this information.
China’s state-run news channel CCTV said the exercise had begun and would end at 04:00 GMT on Sunday. It said that this is the largest military exercise ever conducted by China in the Taiwan Strait. In this, live firing will be done in the waters and airspace around Taiwan.
According to Reuters, China’s Eastern Theater Command said it had fired several missiles into the waters off the east coast of Taiwan as part of its major military exercise. China last fired a missile into the waters around Taiwan in 1996.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said several Dongfeng missiles were fired into the waters in the northeast and southwest of the island.
Why is China angry?
China has never controlled Taiwan, but considers it its territory. At the same time, he has been saying for a long time that he can annex Taiwan by force if needed.
China is angered by the visit of Pelosi (82), who left Taiwan on Wednesday. It was the first visit to Taiwan by a current speaker of the US House of Representatives in nearly 25 years.
Pelosi’s visit has signaled a further souring of already strained Sino-US relations. China has warned the US that Pelosi’s visit will have “serious implications for the political foundations of China-US relations”.
Official media said the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) practiced long-range strikes on Thursday afternoon, bombarding designated locations in the eastern parts of the Taiwan Strait.
The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command, which oversees Taiwan and related areas, conducted the exercise around 1 a.m. local time.
The attacks have been carried out and the campaign has yielded the expected results, the state-run China Daily reported. Detailed information about this has not been given in the news.
China’s state-run Xinhua news agency said the exercises were joint operations focused on “blockades, attacks on maritime targets, attacks on ground targets and airspace control”. The exercise, which started on Thursday, will continue till Sunday.
