Colombo: For more than a month, there has been a nationwide public outcry that Gotabaya Rajapakse should step down as president and Mahinda Rajapakse as prime minister, taking responsibility for the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Prime Minister following the intensification of the struggle. Outraged, his supporters rallied and attacked the protesters on foot.
Terrorist riots erupted as both sides clashed as supporters and protesters. The riots spread throughout southern Sri Lanka. The public launched a massive offensive against Mahinda Rajapaksa supporters in various parts of the country.
The ancestral home of the Rajapaksa brothers was completely burnt down. The statue of Rajapaksa’s father was also smashed. The houses of 40 leaders were set on fire during the riots. More than a hundred vehicles were also burned.

Fearing for his life as the riots escalated, Mahinda Rajapaksa fled from Allari Palace in Colombo with his family. He was reportedly rescued by military helicopters. He stayed in a Chinese hotel and then went to Trincomalee and took refuge in a naval base there.
Meanwhile, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has announced the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
Accordingly, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has stated that a new Prime Minister will be appointed on behalf of the government which will prove a majority in Parliament following the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

He said a new prime minister would be elected in a week and a cabinet would be formed.
The President also appealed to the people of Sri Lanka to keep the peace. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has also ordered stern action against those involved in the violence.
